92 Points - Halliday Wine Companion 2022
"Hand-picked fruit from rows 19 to 24 off E Block, destemmed with 20% whole bunches. Pressed to 20% new French oak and aged 9 months. This has come together well. There's a depth to the fruit, balanced by the winemaking inputs. Quite savoury, earthy with notes of iodine, poached rhubarb and turmeric. The fuller-bodied palate fleshes out, bolstered by the oak and lightly textured tannins."
- Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion
Tasting Notes:
The cool season has delivered a delicate yet complex rendition of E Block Pinot Noir. Here we have red plum, currants, sour cherries backed by earthy notes and 5 spice.
The palate has a great balance of red berry fruits, cooling acidity and earthy bass notes with anise spice. The ‘Toolangi’ thread is alive here and the 2020 is a complex pinot that is ready to be enjoyed.
Winemaking Notes:
Hand-picked on the 13th of March
Vinification & Elevage: Wild yeast fermented as 80% whole berry and 20% as whole bunch, on skins for 3 weeks. Pressed to barrel (20% new French oak) for natural malolactic conversion, sulphured on lees for 9 months. 125 dozen produced.
Viticultural Notes:
Low cropped and hand harvested from 19-year-old vines of MV6 Pinot Noir clone from a selective section of E Block, rows 35-45, this wine represents the very best Pinot Noir this vineyard produces.
2020 was a long and cool growing season in the Yarra Valley. Winter rains were substantial and by the end of spring we had full and healthy vine canopies. The conditions around flowering were challenging leading to low fruit yields. The season progressed with very mild conditions extending the ripening period for harvest well into Autumn for some varieties. The 2020 wines reflect our part of the world and our cool climate.
