91 Points - The Wine Front
‘Terre’ translates from French to ‘Earth’ and relates to the shallow soil profile over a seam of granite bedrock under the vines from which this wine is made.
Tasting Notes: This Upper Yarra Pinot highlights its cool climate origins. The wine is subtle in colour, delicate yet full of nuance and charm. Here we have plenty of dried herb, earthy forest floor notes, red berries and spiced walnut aromas. The palate is savoury with red cherry, clove, a proper mineral tannin with a cleansing acidity.
Winemaking Notes: Hand-picked on the 25th of March
Vinification: & Elevage Fruit was sorted and fermented as 80% whole berries, 20% as whole bunches. 4 day cold soak and on skins for 3 weeks. Pressed to barrel (25% new French oak) for natural malolactic conversion, sulphured on lees for 9 months. 250 dozen produced.
Viticultural Notes: The grapes for this wine are from a vineyard in Gembrook and is the southernmost vineyard in the Yarra Valley. Whilst known for its volcanic derived red soils, this vineyard sits on a Granite outcrop. These quartz rich soils are perfect for growing Pinot Noir.
2020 was a long and cool growing season in the Yarra Valley. Winter rains were substantial and by the end of spring we had full and healthy vine canopies. The conditions around flowering were challenging leading to low fruit yields. The season progressed with very mild conditions extending the ripening period for harvest well into Autumn for some varieties. The 2020 wines reflect our part of the world and our cool climate.
